This coach house revitalization project included part of an estate whose main house was designed in 1908 by William Carbys Zimmerman, an architect known for Chicago Park District buildings. It is a National Register property. Though no drawings for the coach house have been found, it is assumed to date to around the same time as the main house.
The owners of this coach house desired to demolish a 1960s-era family room and provide an
addition that was more compatible with the coach house in terms of massing and materials, and provide a link to the existing three-car garage. The addition would house a kitchen and family
room on the first floor and a bedroom upstairs. At the same time, they also wanted to renovate the interior so that the house would function more efficiently and relate better to its site.
Besides the addition, the project made improvements to the front of the house, returning it to a style more in keeping with the rest of the house. The project also revised the home's driveway configuration to eliminate extensive blacktop
that had obliterated much of the front yard, replacing it with a landscaped courtyard, bench
and new landscaping.
