The First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest is one of the community's finest and most prized architectural structures. The original building structure, designed by Charles Summer Frost in 1886, and a prime example of the Shingle Style, has been renovated, altered and expanded several times during the building's long history. Located adjacent to Lake Forest College, the original entries to the church were intentionally designed to face east, toward the college. A porte cocher, open loggia and entry stairs comprised the primary entry to the sanctuary. In the late 1950s, the open entrance loggia and stairways were enclosed, and the open porte cocher was eliminated because of an addition to the north. The church's formal orientation to the college and intersecting streets had been destroyed.
Our goal was to reestablish the importance of the original design orientation of the building structure. We created a hierarchy of entry doors, which enchanced the narthex entry doors and made subordinate all other doors. We raised the south narthex door above grade, providing weather protection, and created a covered porch area, reminiscent of the original open covered porch. The door slabs were replaced with new, appropriately designed doors in the Shingle Style. In addition, a new hardscape and reworked landscaping emphasizes the entry hierarchy and enhances relationship between the church and the college once again.
